Why Michael Is A Woodwind Doubler
In 2014, at the age of thirteen, Michael McCann met Claude Thomas, one of the most influential mentors in his career. At that time, Michael was playing only the flute and had joined Dayton's youth theatre company, Muse Machine, for their production of Oliver. Claude recognized Michael's talent for flute and show playing and encouraged him to explore other woodwinds. Following Claude's advice, Michael joined Stivers' jazz band group on alto saxophone. As his passion for jazz and Broadway music grew, Michael decided to learn the clarinet as well.

By the age of sixteen, Michael had a falling out with classical flute, his primary focus until then, and decided to devote himself fully to mastering the flute, saxophone, and clarinet. He practiced all three instruments diligently and participated in every show he could. Over the years, he played in six Muse Machine productions, five productions at Stivers, and various community theatre productions.

Despite his love for performing, Michael initially pursued classical flute at Indiana University. However, his commitment to flute left him with little time for his other instruments. In 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted his studies, Michael rediscovered his passion for playing multiple instruments. He decided to leave Indiana University and transferred to Cleveland State University, located near the largest playhouse district in the U.S. outside of Broadway.

Since graduating in the spring of 2024, Michael has been performing in as many shows as possible, including at Playhouse Square, fully embracing his love for woodwinds and theatre.
